Choosing the Right Clubhead Design for Your Left Handed Wedge
Most wedges in general are made from either ‘forged’ or softer feeling ‘cast’ steel, the difference being in the way the clubs are made. Most wedges have similar head shape and design features with a variation of groove and sole designs. Their centre of gravity positioning can also differ which helps control the trajectory of the shot so along with personal preference, ability and budget, all of these factors will contribute to making the final decision.
Cavity Back Wedges
Wedges rarely come with a cavity back, unless they’re part of a set of cavity back irons. However, this allows for greater forgiveness on off-centre strikes. The only down fall of cavity backed wedges is the lack of control you get especially on the shorter shots. If you already have a cavity back set of irons, including the Gap and Sand wedge then we would advise investing in a ‘bladed’ lob wedge which is not cavity backed. These clubs offer excellent versatility for lob shots and in bunkers.
Chipper Wedges
If you struggle to chip the ball then we would advise purchasing a chipper, a standalone club designed to play like a putting action. Chippers make lofting the ball in the air extremely easy and are best when used just off the putting surface, however, they should not to be used in full shots.
